Course Description:

This course is designed to provide nonprofit leaders the tools to move from simply managing the finances of their organization to strategically use financial information to ensure effective decision-making and organizational sustainability.  Key points covered include:

  • Budgeting, variance analysis and the importance of trends
  • Unit cost analysis and cost allocation
  • Billing, collections and managing receivables
  • Monitoring and reporting.


About the Presenter:

Jeff Burks Mascara is Executive Vice President/CEO of Southwestern Pennsylvania Human Services, Inc. (SPHS).  Employed with SPHS for over 30 years, Mascara is currently responsible for management, organizational planning and direction of SPHS and its seven affiliate human services agencies.  The SPHS system is a $55 million nonprofit enterprise that employs approximately 900 people throughout Westmoreland, Washington, Greene and Fayette Counties in southwestern Pennsylvania. Primary areas of programming include outpatient substance abuse treatment, a wide array of outpatient and residential mental health treatment services, various programs for developmentally disabled individuals, HUD housing programs and numerous services to both children and older adults. 

Mascara is a graduate of Grove City College, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Psychology.  Mascara also received a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Pittsburgh.  Mascara has extensive experience in developing and sustaining fee-for-service programming, billing and collections process and systems development, leadership training and mentoring, mergers and collaborations, as well as business strategy and facilities development and management. Over the past seven years, he has led SPHS in a 23 million dollar growth in services and new programs. Additionally, he has led the development and incorporation of two nonprofit agencies. 

Mascara is a member of the Val-U-Health PHO Board of Directors; Monongahela Valley Hospital Patient Safety Committee; Comprehensive Community Services Board of Directors; California University of Pennsylvania, Social Work Department Board of Advisors; the Advisory Board of the Douglas Education Center; and DPW's Statewide Children's Behavioral Health Task Force.  Mascara also belongs to the Charleroi and Washington County Chambers of Commerce.  He is a former Treasurer of the Board of Directors of Leadership Washington County.
