The Stranahan Supporting Organization Guidelines

At present, the Stranahan Supporting Organization does not accept unsolicited grant applications or proposals. These Guidelines are provided only to select nonprofits as determined by the Stranahan Supporting Organization Board of Trustees.

STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES

GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Our grant making is guided by the following values:

Self-Sufficiency
We believe that self-sufficient people can best help themselves and others. Our goal will always be to help people become independent and responsible citizens.

Respect
For oneself, for the community and for the environment.

Freedom
Of thought, speech, religion, and economic choices within a just and democratic society.

Courage
To embrace change and, if necessary, to take the initiative to bring about positive change.

We believe that these fundamental values are best instilled at a young age and within closely-knit environments. Many of our grants, therefore, will be directed towards younger age groups and to smaller, carefully monitored program efforts.

Finally, we look for organizations with accountable leadership, capable of using philanthropic resources wisely.

The Stranahan Supporting Organization will not support organizations that discriminate in their leadership, staffing, or service provision on the basis of age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, national origin, political affiliation or religious beliefs.

FUNDING AREAS

Education
The Stranahan Supporting Organization's emphasis is to increase the number of quality educational opportunities at the primary and secondary school levels, and to promote greater access to such programs.

The Stranahan Supporting Organization is particularly interested in learning institutions that value independent thinking, artistic appreciation, cultural, economic and ethnic diversity, and community service.

The Stranahan Supporting Organization does not rule out support to higher learning institutions, however, we prefer to fund small, manageable programs.

Health Care
The Stranahan Supporting Organization supports programs that:

  • Create better access to health care;
  • Support research to eradicate health crises;
  • Educate people to take better care of themselves;
  • Encourage cooperation and consolidation among health care providers;
  • Support alternate health care methods.

Cultural
The Stranahan Supporting Organization believes the arts have a special ability to improve the quality of our lives because they communicate, delight, motivate and help build self-esteem. Efforts in this area should demonstrate community support.

Community Initiatives
The Stranahan Supporting Organization supports organizations which help people discover that they can help themselves become self-sufficient by working together to improve their community.
