The Board of Trustees of the Toledo Community Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that Jasmine Shells of West Toledo is the recipient of a $1,500 Buckeye CableSystem/TV One Scholarship. This scholarship, new in 2009, provides an annual, one-time award for graduating high school students of African American heritage who are permanent residents of Buckeye CableSystem’s Toledo service area to attend an accredited post-secondary institution of their choice.

Ms. Shells graduated from Central Catholic High School and will attend the  University of Notre Dame this fall where she will study pre-med.

Ms. Shells was a member of and on the Executive Board of the Gospel Choir at Central Catholic; a member of the National Honors Society; member of the African-American Club and the after school STARS tutoring program; and served on the Spiritual Committee while at Central Catholic.  Her community service involvement includes volunteer work for her church and at various kitchens that feed needy in our community.

The Scholarship was established by Buckeye CableSystem and TV One, a cable television network targeting primarily African American adults with a broad range of lifestyle and entertainment-oriented programming. TV One is available on Buckeye CableSystem's digital channel number 186.  Buckeye CableSystem serves more than 130,000 customers in the greater Toledo area, offering some 265 digital, high-definition, and analog channels of entertainments and information.  The locally owned firm also offers Buckeye Tel, residential telephone service, and Buckeye Express high-speed Internet access.

Scholarship applicants are required to have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and submitted an essay addressing the theme “America’s First African-American President, Barack Obama: How Will it Influence Your Life as an African-American?”
