Buckeye CableSystem/TV One 2011 Scholarship Recipient Announced

Taylour Upton, Start High School, is the recipient of a $1,500 Scholarship

TOLEDO, OHIO, May 20, 2011 – The Board of Trustees of Toledo Community Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that Taylour Upton of West Toledo is the recipient of a $1,500 Buckeye CableSystem/TV One Scholarship. This scholarship provides an annual, one-time award for graduating high school students of African American heritage who are permanent residents of Buckeye CableSystem’s Toledo service area to attend an accredited post-secondary institution of their choice.

Ms. Upton will graduate on June 6, 2011 from Start High School, and will attend The Ohio State University this fall where she will study architecture.

Active throughout her high school years, Ms. Upton was involved in the Roy C. Start Chapter of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honorary program, University of Toledo EXCEL program, and the American Karate System Martial Arts program. Her community service involvement includes participating in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk, Glass City Marathon Race for Autism, Toledo EXCEL, and various Start High School event committees, among others.

The Scholarship was established by Buckeye CableSystem and TV One, a cable television network targeting primarily African American adults with a broad range of lifestyle and entertainment-oriented programming.  TV One is available on Buckeye CableSystem’s
digital channel number 186.  Buckeye CableSystem serves more than 130,000 customers in the greater Toledo area, offering 300 digital, high-definition, and analog channels of entertainment and information, as well as video on demand.  The locally owned firm also offers Buckeye Tel, residential telephone service, and Buckeye Express high-speed Internet access.

Scholarship applicants are required to have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and submitted an essay addressing the theme “America’s First African-American President, Barack Obama: How Will it Influence Your Life as an African-American?”

Applications for the Buckeye CableSystem/TV One Scholarship of the Toledo Community Foundation are available through the Guidance Departments of high schools in the Buckeye CableSystem Toledo service area, generally after the first of the year. Scholarship awards are announced in April.
