TOLEDO, OHIO, May 22, 2012 – The Board of Trustees of Toledo Community Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that Eva de la Serna of Ottawa Hills is the recipient of a $1,500 Buckeye CableSystem/Telemundo Scholarship. This scholarship provides an annual, one-time award for graduating high school students of Hispanic heritage who are permanent residents of Buckeye CableSystem’s Toledo service area to attend an accredited post-secondary institution of their choice.
Ms. de la Serna graduates in June from Ottawa Hills High School and will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall where she will major in chemical engineering.
While in high school, Ms. de la Serna took part in many activities including the Toledo ZooTeen Program, Eclipse Club (environmental awareness club), Summer Academy for Math and Science (Carnegie Mellon University), AFS (intercultural program), and volunteered at the University of Toledo Department of Biochemistry and Cancer Biology, among others. She was active in the National Junior Honors Society and National Honors Society, and MESASA – the Ottawa Hills High School yearbook. Ms. de la Serna has received numerous national, state and local awards for her excellence in science and math.
The Scholarship was established by Buckeye CableSystem and Telemundo, one of the Spanish-language networks carried on Buckeye. Scholarship applicants are required to have a
minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and submit an essay addressing the theme “I’m Proud to be a Hispanic-American in Ohio.”
Buckeye CableSystem serves more than 130,000 customers in the greater Toledo area, offering 300 digital, high-definition, and analog channels of entertainments and information, as well as video on demand. The locally owned firm also offers Buckeye Tel, residential telephone service, and Buckeye Express high-speed Internet access.
Applications for the Buckeye CableSystem/Telemundo Scholarship of the Toledo Community Foundation are available through the Guidance Departments of high schools in the Buckeye CableSystem Toledo service area, generally after the first of the year. Scholarship awards are announced in April.
