The Board of Trustees of Toledo Community Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that Javier Ramon Gomez of Toledo, OH is the recipient of a $1,500 Buckeye CableSystem/Telemundo Scholarship. This scholarship provides an annual, one-time award for graduating high school students of Hispanic heritage who are permanent residents of Buckeye CableSystem’s Toledo service area to attend an accredited post-secondary institution of their choice.

Mr. Gomez graduates in May from St. Francis de Sales High School and will attend The University of Toledo this fall where he plans to major in electrical engineering.

While in high school, Mr. Gomez participated in LASSO, the school’s Hispanic Club, was a Mock Trial team member, and played soccer, tennis and basketball.  His volunteer opportunities include being a Summer Youth Employee for the Believe Center (former Aurora Gonzalez Center) and St. Luke’s Hospital, and he worked with Sofia Quintero Arts & Cultural Center and the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC).

This scholarship was established by Buckeye CableSystem and Telemundo, one of the Spanish-language networks carried on Buckeye. Scholarship applicants are required to have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and submit an essay addressing the theme “I’m Proud to be a Latino in Ohio.”

Buckeye CableSystem serves more than 120,000 customers in the greater Toledo area, offering 300 digital, high-definition, and analog channels of entertainment and information, as well as video on demand.  The locally owned firm also offers Buckeye Phone, residential telephone service, and Buckeye Express high-speed Internet access.
