TCF Announces Recipient of Horace Gilbert Orser Memorial Scholarship

Published on 04/20/2016 by Joanne M Olnhausen

Toledo Community Foundation is pleased to announce that Alexis (Allie) Kemp has been awarded the Horace Gilbert Orser Memorial Scholarship, a full-ride scholarship offered to one Perrysburg High School student.  Allie is the daughter of Herbert and Kerri Kemp of Perrysburg, OH.  Consideration for award of this scholarship is contingent upon a student’s acceptance at one of 12 eligible schools.

This scholarship, administered by Toledo Community Foundation, is available to graduates of Perrysburg High School who attend one of the following schools:  Amherst College, Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, MIT, Princeton University, Trinity College, University of Pennsylvania, Williams College or Yale University.  The scholarship supports tuition, room, board and supplementary fees for one student to obtain an undergraduate degree at one of these schools.

Ms. Kemp will be attending Cornell University to continue her academic and athletic careers.  She has been accepted into the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to major in Nutritional Sciences, and will seek a minor in Psychology. She also plans to continue her running career in cross-country and track and field. This is the first new recipient of this scholarship award since 2004. The first recipient of the Orser Scholarship was Christopher Frissora, PHS Class of 1997, and the second was Karl Meyer, PHS Class of 2004.

Horace Gilbert Orser was a member of Princeton University’s Class of 1931. A Perrysburg resident from 1936 until his death in 1991, Mr. Orser was supportive of numerous charitable and civic causes, including higher education. Although Mr. Orser left Princeton before obtaining his degree, he believed his years at Princeton changed his life. He also felt that the experience would not have been possible without some financial assistance. In 1995, his widow, Mrs. Grace Ford Orser, and her family generously established a scholarship fund at Toledo Community Foundation honoring the memory of Mr. Orser and his commitment to both Princeton and the community of Perrysburg. While the first two recipients of this award did attend Princeton, the list of eligible schools was expanded in 2014 to open up the opportunity to more students.
